Celebrating Safer Internet Day in MQP

6th February 2026

Safer Internet Day 2026 will take place on Tuesday, 10th February 2026, with celebrations and learning focused on the theme:

“Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI.”

As the midterm break falls on this date, the teachers in MQP chose to explore this highly topical theme during the week leading up to Safer Internet Day, ensuring that all pupils had the opportunity to engage with and learn about artificial intelligence in a meaningful and age‑appropriate way

Here's what we got up to:

Primary 1 children were learning about 'Roo's New Friend'. They discovered her new friend was actually a voice assistant. We identified things a voice assistant can do (find out facts, set alarms, play music), and the things they cannot do (make the dinner, have feelings, give us hugs!) Smartie the Penguin also helped teach Primary One how to stay safe online. His little song helped everyone remember that it’s important to ask an adult for help.

Primary 2 had great fun learning about Roo's new friend and the differences between voice assistants and real people. We talked about how we can use voice assistants safely.

Primary 3 learned about what voice assistants are. We discussed how they are not real people. We firstly talked about ways we use voice assistants in our daily lives. In groups, we then sorted what we should and shouldn't use voice assistants for.

Primary 4s started their Safe Internet discussions by watching a PowerPoint all about Roo and her new friend. We found out that even though technology can be very helpful there is a big difference between technology and family and friends.

Primary 5D discussed the Dos and Don’ts of using AI and created their own class mascot using the power of AI. Everyone got a chance to design their own branded mascot to warn everyone how to use AI sensibly.

Primary 5OM watched the PowerPoint presentation about Safer Internet day, which explained all about Smart tech and safe choices. They learned about using AI, debating when it is okay and what is not okay to use AI and what an AI chatbot is. The children also discussed the pros and cons of using AI, the importance of following these three steps while using AI; Stop, Think and Ask and always checking with a trusted adult. They designed their own Safer Internet posters.

Primary 6 had a thoughtful discussion about what is okay and not okay when using AI. They learned about chatbots and, after planning suitable questions and statements for their Fortune Teller games, they visited the Primary 4 and Primary 5 classes. The Primary 6 pupils shared what they had learned, helping younger pupils understand what chatbots are and how to use them safely and sensibly.

Primary 7 pupils developed their ICT skills by creating short information iMovies about AI chatbots. These films were designed for a Key Stage 2 audience and explained what a chatbot is, as well as how chatbots can be used sensibly and responsibly in everyday life. A few of the finished iMovies can be viewed below.

The children also used their knowledge to create fortune tellers, using images of well-known Chatbots, statements and questions to create a fun game with an important message.

Well done to everyone. Hopefully the important message about AI and AI chatbots will stay with them as they continue to learn, explore, and enjoy their online world
