Y6 STEM Day in St. Killian's College
10th June 2019
Primary six headed off for another STEM project day (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). This time the hosts were St. Killian’s college. The theme of this project was Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Medicine. The children prepared for this day by completing a number of fun and exciting experiments in the classroom. These included; Willy Wonka’s gummy bears, Skittle sweet race, Matilda’s egg shell challenge and creating BFG ears. The children were fantastic scientists and showed wonderful, innovative skills when inventing their creations. At St. Killian’s the children had the opportunity to use the science labs to conduct their investigations.
STEM is important because it pervades every part of our lives. Science is everywhere in the world around us. Technology is continuously expanding into every aspect of our lives. Engineering is the basic designs of roads and bridges, but also tackles the challenges of changing global weather and environmentally-friendly changes to our home. Mathematics is in every occupation, every activity we do in our lives. By exposing students to STEM and giving them opportunities to explore STEM-related concepts, they will develop a passion for it. A curriculum that is STEM-based has real-life situations to help the student learn.
The children had a fantastic experience at both St. Killian’s College and St. Louis’ Grammar. The project gave them a real taste of some of the STEM opportunities they will be provided with at their chosen secondary school in the not too distant future.
