World Maths Day 2024
22nd March 2024
Another exciting day in MQP with the celebration of World Maths Day. All the children explored number in a variety of practical activities linked to our Maths Mastery scheme.
Year 1 - Primary One had a fun packed Maths Day. They started with their Dobble Number of the day. At play time they were busy having snowball races and making polar bears, a taller one and one which was smaller. Finally at number time they had to make sets of numbers and sets that had one more whilst others were busy sorting our coppers and collecting our coppers. A busy day.
Year 2 - Weight - The children had to find the mass of different objects using cubes and balancing scales. The children made an estimation and then checked the result. The children then compared the different objects to find out which was the heaviest and the lightest.
Year 3 - Time and Fractions -Primary 3 were focusing on time and sequencing a morning routine, writing the time in 5 minute intervals. The children were also finding halves and quarters of numbers (using counters and numerals) and shapes.
Year 4 - Fact Families - The children are using the "If I know... then I know”, strategy to help them create fact families. They were also working in pairs using the Diennes rods and the function machine to scale up and down by 10.
Year 5 - Time - The children have been working on telling the time every 5 minutes, playing time bingo, testing their partner using an analogue and digital clock as well as sequencing different times of the day.
Year 6 - Fractions, decimals and percentages - The children are learning how to use a common denominator to add fractions together. They are also learning how to use decimals and percentages of a number or set.
Year 7 - Data Handling - The children looked at the number of different types of passengers onboard the Titanic and then compared that to the number of passengers that survived. They collated this data on a compound graph, which showed the startling statistics much more clearly. The Year 7 children also completed their annual Hit the Button Championship to mark World Maths Day.
Well done everyone! Our Maths Minds are being kept very busy in MQP.
