World Maths Day 2023
23rd March 2023
What an extremely busy, exciting, fun-filled, practical day for all the children in MQP as we celebrated World Maths Day.
Year 1 joined their friends in Camphill PS and took part in a very eggciting Easter number hunt.
Year 2 explored shape and pattern using iPads, completed addition sums to feed the correct dog a bone, cracked egg number bonds for the farmer and sang beautifully our 12 months of the year. Year 2 finished their day exploring number 7 and 8 using tallies, words, coins, tens frames, counting objects and completing number sentences with Camphill PS.
Year 3 were busy, busy, busy in all their practical maths activities. They started off going around the classrooms, collecting information and using tally charts to find out the favourite weather in each class. They then used this information to complete bar graphs. Next up was a fun maths carousel included stations in weighing, shape pictures, completing calculations using their Smart Chutes and adding and subtracting ten in a dice game.
Year 4 enjoyed participating in a Who wants to be a Millionaire quiz and a World Maths Day Quiz where they had to conquer challenges on money, time, place value and division as well as looking at patterns formed through tessellation. The children finished off their day by singing A Million Dreams!
Year 5 used numeracy vocabulary to guess which number their partner had selected for them. They came up with a range of questions that could only be answered with a "yes or no". They also worked on problem solving skills using Izak9 cubes. Their task today was to use 4 cubes to make the number twenty. The children were very creative with the operations they used (subtracting, adding, multiplying and dividing) to make twenty.
Year 6 enjoyed getting outside and hands on learning about perimeter for World Maths Day. Using trundle wheels, they measured the perimeter of the school and playgrounds, while thinking about the perimeter of a new school.
In Year 7 their Maths heads were definitely on as they marked World Maths Day.
The day began with the Hit the Button Times Tables Championship. You could have heard a pin drop as everyone tried to make it into the first round. Well done to the eventual winner - a very close competition.
A paper aeroplane investigation was the highlight of the day. The children designed their planes and launched them five times, measuring how far they travelled each time.
They then analysed their data to find the MEAN, MEDIAN, MODE and RANGE.
What a wonderful day for everyone. Don’t forget we will be continuing our World Maths Day celebrations in Martinstown Parish Hall this Saturday 25 March at 3 p.m. for our Family Bingo. This is open to everyone in the community. Please continue to spread the word as there are some fantastic family prizes up for grabs!
