Growing Club
20th March 2019
The grounds in Cargan and Martinstown are looking fantastic. Mrs Duffin's Y5 class have been so busy. Thank-you for all your work and the report & photos from the club.
Growing Club: Day 2
This week the children have been busy little bees, making bird houses to place in the trees around our school. Working in groups of five, the children listened carefully to the instructions given to them by the team from the Council’s Growing Communities Department. They used their thinking and problem solving skills to decipher where the pieces of wood had to be placed in order to make the bird house. Then they hammered, screwed and drilled to complete each bird house. Each group then decided what birds they would like to attract to their bird house and a hole was drilled depending on the bird type. We hope to see lots of birds availing of their new shelter in the near future!
After this, we had just enough time to plant some broad beans, garden peas and beetroot. The children are gaining skills for life! We are loving how we can learn outside and look forward to the next session.
Growing Club: Day 3
This week the children have been helping to transform the area beside the steps down to the park. Thanks to the volunteers from the Council’s Growing Communities Department, (who supplied the bricks), we were able to make a pathway from the steps right around to the garden area. The children dug out an area using a wooden template as a guide, then placed six bricks in to make the stepping stone. This tied in nicely with our maths lesson on tessellation! It is fantastic to see the children connecting their maths to real life situations. In the garden, the children planted potatoes in the raised beds which they built on the first day of Growing Club. We are all looking forward to enjoying the fruits of our labour! It really is amazing what can be achieved in just 2 hours. Fantastic work Primary 5!
