Final Day of Growing Club
14th June 2019
Day 6
Today was a day of mixed emotions as the children were both excited to be harvesting the potatoes and sad, as it was the last day of Growing Club. The weather was kind to us again, as the children set to work after break-time. This was going to take more organising than in previous weeks!
The first job was to harvest the potatoes, and it was like digging for buried treasure! The children’s faces when they saw the first glimpse of a potato was magical! In pairs, the children had a go at digging and gathering some potatoes for the pot. Once they were gathered the children washed them. No need to peel these potatoes – they were so fresh!
When Marlene arrived she couldn’t believe how well the potatoes and herbs had grown. Once again we told her it was the Glenravel air! Some of the children then took the potatoes over to boil, while the others were busy washing and chopping the herbs for the yoghurt dip and the flavoured water. We used some mint, lemon balm and calendula flowers for the water and for the yoghurt dip some mint and a squeeze of lemon.
The best bit for everyone was getting to taste the fruits of their labour! We enjoyed some crackers and dip, followed by some boiled potatoes and dip and the flavoured water. We cannot thank Marlene, from the Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, enough for all her help over the last few months. The children have been given a wonderful opportunity to learn outdoors and experience the process of growing produce from scratch. I hope the children will continue to grow their own produce at home!
